Clinical Codes

Some FHIR resources uses clinical codes from different coding systems like e.g. FEST or ATC. A coding system (kodeverk) is a group of codes which documents clinical information in an electronic patient journal (EPJ), like e.g. diagnoses, test results or drugs (legemiddel). Codes and coding systems are therefore an important part of the critical-information domain.

All coding systems used in the critical-information API can be downloaded via the Coding System Service.

Client Responsibilty

The critical-information API validates that the codes sent in by the client is a valid code for the given coding system. The clients must therefore keep track of the codes and coding systems they use. This means updating the coding systems regularly to make sure that inactive or removed codes are not used.

Excluded Codes

Based on a clinical assessment, it should not be possible to register critical information for all codes. We have therefore excluded some codes in certain coding systems.

  • Deactivated codes which are inactive ingredients (salts) for "Terapeutiske Virkestoff" codes in the FEST_VIRKESTOFF coding system.
  • For the ICD10 coding system we have excluded chapters XX (V0n-Y98) and XXI (Z00-Z99).

See full documentation in the Coding System Service.

If a client still wants to register one of these codes then we need to consider this on a case by case basis.
